The war everyone can see is over. The one in the shadows is just beginning.

Master Gunnery Sergeant John Ryerson has faced alien armies, hostile fleets, and human enemies who wanted him dead. It was easy to tell they were enemies; they were shooting at him. Now, however, someone wants the technology that made his four-meter-tall MIMIC war machine, Mike, possible, and they’re willing to kill everyone associated with the project to get it.

China has already stolen the plans, and its scientists are combining stolen MIMIC technology with something far more dangerous: an alien war machine containing an organic brain. The result is Project Shenji, and if it succeeds, the balance of power across human space could change forever.

But China isn’t the only player in the game, and highly trained mercenaries are hunting Ryerson’s people on Earth. Worse, the trail leading back to them ends disturbingly close to the halls of power.

With nations maneuvering for control of the most powerful weapon humanity has ever created, Ryerson and Mike are being dragged into a conflict where there are no battle lines, no declarations of war, and no guarantee that the people giving the orders can be trusted.
